GPS Tracker FAQ: 31 Real Questions Answered (2026)

We pulled together the questions people actually search for when they're trying to figure out GPS trackers, how they work, what they cost, whether they need internet, and more.

Every answer below is short, straight, and based on how the Cube GPS PRO actually works. Use the jump links to skip to the topic you care about.

How GPS Trackers Work

What is a GPS tracking system?

A GPS tracking system is a small device that finds its own location using satellites, then sends that location to an app on your phone over the cellular network. You see the live location on a map, get alerts if it leaves a set area, and can check where it's been.

How does a GPS tracker work in a car?

You attach the tracker somewhere on the car, the Cube GPS PRO uses a magnet so it sticks to any metal surface in seconds. It picks up its location from satellites and sends it to your phone over 4G, so you can see exactly where the car is in real time. See our full lineup of GPS Trackers for Cars to find the right fit for your vehicle.

How do I use a GPS tracker?

Attach the tracker to whatever you want to track, pair it with the Cube Tracker app over Bluetooth, choose a subscription plan, and you're done. You can then see its live location, set up alerts, and check its location history right from your phone.

Does a GPS tracker work for kids too?

Yes, the same technology used to track cars and pets works for keeping tabs on kids. A lightweight tracker clipped to a backpack or belt sends real-time location to a parent's phone, with alerts when a child arrives at or leaves school.

Where do you put a GPS tracker in a car?

The most common spots are under the bumper, inside a wheel well, or anywhere along the metal frame underneath the car. The Cube GPS PRO's built-in magnet holds firmly in any of these spots, no drilling, wiring, or tools needed.

How many GPS satellites are there?

There are at least 24 GPS satellites orbiting the Earth at any time, with extras in reserve. A GPS tracker only needs a clear view of 4 of them to figure out its exact location, which is why GPS works almost anywhere outdoors.

Cost & Subscriptions

How much does GPS tracking cost?

Most GPS trackers cost $25–$75 for the device, plus a monthly subscription for the cellular data connection. Cube GPS subscriptions start at $16.50/month on an annual plan, or $19.95/month paid monthly, with no cancellation fees either way.

Does a GPS tracker need a subscription?

Yes. Real-time GPS trackers send their location over a cellular network, and that connection requires an active data plan  the same way your phone needs a plan to use data. Without a subscription, the tracker can't report its location to your app.

Where can I buy a GPS tracking device?

You can buy the Cube GPS PRO directly at cubetracker.com, or through Amazon and Best Buy. Buying direct gets you the same device and lifetime warranty, often with the latest accessories and bundles included.

Is there a GPS tracker with no monthly fee?

Not for real-time tracking. Any tracker that shows a live location needs a cellular data connection, which means a monthly plan. Devices advertised with "no fees" are usually Bluetooth trackers like AirTag, which only work near other phones and can't show live movement.

Is vehicle tracking expensive?

Not really, a quality vehicle tracker like the Cube GPS PRO runs about $75 upfront, then $16.50/month after that. Over a year that's around $273 total, which is far less than the cost of one stolen vehicle or one missed family emergency.

Can I cancel my GPS tracker subscription anytime?

Yes. Cube GPS plans have no cancellation fees and no long-term contract. You can cancel anytime in the app, and your service simply runs until the end of the billing period you already paid for.

Battery & Charging

How long does a GPS tracker battery last?

It depends on the device and how often it updates its location. The Cube GPS PRO lasts up to a year on a single charge at standard settings, while trackers updating every few seconds will drain faster and may only last a few days to weeks.

How often do GPS trackers update location?

Most trackers let you choose, anywhere from every 10 seconds to every few minutes. Faster updates give you more precise real-time tracking but use more battery. The Cube Tracker app lets you adjust this setting any time based on what you need.

Is a GPS tracker rechargeable?

Yes, the Cube GPS Tracker and Cube GPS PRO both use rechargeable batteries that plug in with a standard USB cable. There's no need to buy replacement batteries, just recharge it when the app shows the battery getting low.

Can a GPS tracker drain a car battery?

A battery-powered magnetic tracker like the Cube GPS PRO runs on its own internal battery, so it has no effect on your car battery at all. Only hardwired trackers that plug directly into a vehicle's electrical system can draw power from the car.

Internet & Signal

Does a GPS tracker need internet to work?

It needs a cellular data connection, not home WiFi. The Cube GPS PRO comes with a built-in worldwide SIM card, so it connects to the cellular network directly, no WiFi router or hotspot required, anywhere it has signal.

Can a GPS tracker work without cell service?

No. A real-time GPS tracker needs cellular signal to send its location to your phone. Without service, like deep in a parking garage or a remote area with no coverage, it can still find its GPS position but can't transmit it until signal returns.

Where am I? How does GPS know my location?

Your GPS device listens to signals from multiple satellites overhead and measures how long each signal took to arrive. By comparing the timing from at least four satellites, it calculates its exact position on Earth, usually accurate to within a few meters.

Does a GPS tracker use a lot of data?

No! GPS trackers send tiny location packets, not video or browsing data, so they use very little cellular data. This is why the data is bundled into a low monthly subscription rather than billed by usage.

Which Tracker Is Best For...

Which GPS tracker is best for a car?

For most cars, a magnetic battery-powered tracker like the Cube GPS PRO is the easiest option, no wiring, no installer needed, just attach it under the vehicle. It's rechargeable, waterproof, and gives you real-time location plus speed alerts straight to your phone.

Which GPS tracker is best for dogs and cats?

Look for one that's lightweight, waterproof, and uses real GPS rather than just Bluetooth. The Cube GPS Tracker pairs with a collar clip, is IP67 waterproof, and gives real-time location updates, unlike Bluetooth-only trackers that only work near other phones. See our full guide to the GPS Tracker For Dogs for collar setup tips and what to expect from battery life on an active dog.

Which GPS tracker is best for kids?

Look for one with real-time tracking, geofence alerts for school zones, and an SOS button for emergencies. The Cube GPS PRO has all three, plus a rechargeable battery and a compact size that fits easily on a backpack or belt clip.

Which GPS tracker has the longest battery life?

The Cube GPS PRO leads the category with up to one year of battery life on a single charge at standard update settings, well beyond the few days to a few weeks most competing trackers offer.

Which GPS tracker is best for a motorcycle or bike?

A small, magnetic, waterproof tracker is the best fit since motorcycles and bikes are exposed to weather and theft. The Cube GPS PRO's magnet mounts to any metal frame in seconds and its IP67 rating handles rain and road spray without issue.

What GPS tracker do truckers and fleets use?

Fleets typically use cellular GPS trackers that report multiple vehicles to one dashboard, showing live location, speed, and route history for every truck at once. Cube GPS supports multiple devices on a single account, making it a practical option for small fleets and owner-operators.
